  50. I don't know the exact number of Abaq transputer machines that were made,
  51. but I am under the impression that the number is in the low hundreds at
  52. best.  It ran a new somewhat-buggy OS that supported parallel processing
  53. and is used in a few universities in Europe.

  56. R&D cost.

  108. Does anybody who uses ST Minix read this newsgroup (anymore) ? Frans
  109. Meulenbroeks (who's name is on the COVER of the ST Minix vers. 1.5
  110. manual ) I know shows up occasionally. anyone else ?

  112. What to do if you want to use partitions BEYOND /dev/hd4 on ST Minix
  113. 1.5 from Prentis-Hall ? Well..... you have to upgrade(=patch) Minix
  114. from version 1.5.10.0 (the version SHIPPED by Prentis-Hall) to at
  115. least version 1.5.10.3 and recompile the thing...... Yes, it DOES
  116. work!!! The patches are available somewhere on plains.nodak.edu for
  117. anonymous ftp.
  118. Now, if you want to be able to use MORE than 5 partitions at one time
  119. (Which is a different matter than using partitions out beyond
  120. /dev/hd4) you'll have to change a #define somewhere. Since I haven't
  121. done it I don't remember where it is..... 4 partitons is more than
  122. enough for my purposes.

  146. First, thank your for your quick answer. But the problem, I have, is
  147. where to poke the font address to. In my programs I user my own fonts,
  148. too. But I wrote them with TOS 1.02. Now, after I installed TOS 1.04,
  149. texts aren't displayed with MY fonts when I use the GfA-Basic TEXT
  150. command. Using TOS 1.02, the address was $8820, but now?! The TOS font
  151. address (the address where to poke the font location to) is still SUB(L%A,
  152. 22).

  200. It's worth pointing out that the flat monthly fee only applies if you call
  201. after 6pm, before 6am, or on weekends.  Otherwise all services are $18/hour
  202. (ouch!) or $24/hour for 9600 baud (Double ouch!).

  240. but you pay a connect charge of $8us per hour, but no charge for

  258. It looks like we are about to get a new generation of USENET users in
  259. comp.sys.atari.st.  The bombardment of computer sales over this facility
  260. tells me that the experienced (but not developer) users are leaving atari
  261. for more prestigious computer systems.  This is great news because we should
  262. see a new wave of enthusiastic users who got a really good deal on the
  263. computer that provides power without the price (and in this case really
  264. without the price).
  265.  
  266. This prompts me to re-encourage us to make the atari archives as user
  267. friendly as possible.  This includes documentation to set up
  268.  
  269.   - MiNT
  270.   - command line editors/shells (bash, gulam, ksh)
  271.   - TeX/LaTeX
  272.   - Uniterm Macros
  273.   - Sozobon C (I think the easy to install package already exists)
  274.   - GNU C
  275.   - g++
  276.  
  277. Also, its time for us to be flame-retardent.  Don't flame, and when you see
  278. a flame skip it (I use the "k" functions of rn).

  293. Yes, I did it.
  294. And here is what to do:
  295. 1)      Take out the old (720k) drive.
  296. 2)      Put in the new one.
  297. 3)      It works.
  298.  
  299. Allthough this works, I wouldn't recommend doing it, since the WD1772-chip isn't
  300. supposed to be able to cope with 16 Mhz. Wait for the new chip from atari !!
  301.  
  302. Note: You have to have your own software to FORMAT HD-disks, but TOS will
  303. automagically read/write HD/normal disks. If you have source to a floppy-
  304. formatter, just change number of sectors to 18 instead of 9 and recompile.
  305. You will then have a HD-formatter.
  306. Also if you have Tos >= 3.05, you can set a DIP-switch so that you may
  307. format HD-disks from the desktop.

  324. Alxe Kieran mentioned on GEnie recently that Hisoft is
  325. updating their Lattice C compiler soon. It is supposed
  326. to have an intergrated project management (aka MAKE).
  327. there is also supposed to be a new "ToolPac" which
  328. will contain many UNIX tools for the LC5 package.

  391. Why don't you simply use CS-TeX, available from several atari servers via ftp.
  392. This program sets up EVERYTHING, the INSTALL.PRG builds all the right files,
  393. directories etc.

  395. There's a TeX shell that makes document recompilation a 3-key issue.
  396. There's an automated Metafont that makes all fonts for your output device(s)
  397. automatically, either on the fly as you need them, or as an overnight job.
  398.  
  399. Naturally, there's a previewer included that works with printer fonts, to
  400. save on disk space.  And of course there's a Panasonic printer driver.

  415. to sort the information by disk # or alphabetical listing of the filenames.
  416. I want it to ask the following info:  disk #, filename, filesize
  417. (optional), and a space for comments.  And this is the most important part.
  418. IT MUST OUTPUT THE INFORMATION IN ASCII.

  508. FOLDR750 is outrageous!  Needless to say, CS-TeX runs fine on TOS < 1.4 with
  509. FOLDR090 or so.  I don't use FOLDRxxx at all (TOS 1.4) and never had any

  571. I have always used the good old Atari black joysticks.  They work well, are
  572. durable, and are *cheap*. ;)  By the way, I have a 1040ST.

  585. In mail to me, Lars-Erik Osterud remarks that some games didn't work under
  586. some TOSes because TOS uses Timer A, which is "reserved for applications."
  587.  
  588. What happened is that TOS used that timer DURING BOOT, which is perfectly
  589. reasonable.  After the boot sequence, it does not use that timer.  However,
  590. it left the timer and its interrupt channel in a state other than the reset
  591. state.  If the game programmer had not made assumptions about the state of
  592. that timer, the game would have worked.
  593.  
  594. The same thing would happen if you ran some other program before the game,
  595. using old TOS, and that program used Timer A (legally) but left it in a
  596. state other than the reset state.  Correct programs do not assume anything
  597. about a resource like this, and approach it carefully. Incorrect programs
  598. might, for example, unmask the interrupt before they install the vector,
  599. because they think it's not enabled or the timer isn't running.
  600.  
  601. The newest TOS leaves that timer in the same state it boots up in: with the
  602. interrupt disabled and the timer stopped.  This is an example of the other
  603. kind of pain we go through in the name of compatibility: we even try to
  604. make badly-written programs continue to work.
  605.  
  606. Finally, for everybody: any time you refer to "some programs" not working,
  607. PLEASE name the programs, so we can check out the reasons here.  We run new
  608. TOSes on our library, but we don't have all programs in the library, and we
  609. don't try them in all ways.  If you can name a program that doesn't work,
  610. we want to hear it so we can investigate.  If it doesn't just bomb on
  611. start-up or something, then explain how to make it fail.

  628. I have the same problem with games. Atari should forget about tricky
  629. people sparing a few dollars for the ROM's by using a disk. You loose
  630. a lot of memory and the ROM's are much more comfortable, if something
  631. went's wrong.

  633. They should place an Atari Emulator for PC's on the market, showing that
  634. emulating a little, outdated 68000 is a very hard job for those super,
  635. duper 80486's. May be the users like the ST-software and then buy a
  636. ST for using it ...
